Everything You Need to Know About COVID-19 aka “Coronavirus” and Your Dog

This is a very scary time for all of us. As a dog mom, I am concerned about this virus affecting my dogs. I’m sharing what I’ve found up to now.. but please note that I’m no medical professional and purely sharing what I gathered from some research. If you think your dog could be infected, please contact your vet for assistance.

Some good news…

There’s been no evidence that the virus could be transferred between human and dog, or vice versa.

Should I be concerned for my dogs?

Health organisations have not voiced concern about pets. Unfortunately, one of the dogs that tested positive in Hong Kong passed away. There’s no evidence that it was due to the virus. The 17-year-old Pomeranian could have passed away from old age or any other health related issues. The second is a German shephard that is currently in quarantine. No further updates have been shared. There’s been no other recorded positive cases since then.

I’m the “rather safe than sorry” kinda girl.. so I’m opting to keep my pooches far far away from any danger. I will make all the time in the world for play dates and park runs – but once this is all over. For now, I will be walking my dogs only in my complex (if they desperately need to get some exercise in) and apply social distancing rules if/when another dog is in the area. The less exposed we all are, the lower the risk.

Preparing for a possible emergency

As we’re all aware, we’re looking at possible stay at home situations. Many people in South Africa are already working from home and minimising contact with people. Stocking up for your dog’s needs should be handled in the same way as yours. Ensure you have enough supplies, food, meds or anything else your dog might need in this time. I would recommend ensuring that you are covered for at least two or three weeks. Currently there’s no reported shortage of pet supplies, but as many of these items are imported, and we’ve closed the ports for now I would recommend that you stock those cupboards just in case.

What if you’re sick or tested positive for COVID-19?

We love our dogs and often find comfort and affection from them when we’re ill. This time around it might have to be a little different. As we don’t have much information on this virus it’s best to minimise contact, practice strict hand washing and hygiene techniques. Ensure to follow your cleaning routine before coming in contact with your dogs, their food, toys or any other items. Keep a close eye on your dog and if you do see any behaviour or health changes, please contact your vet as soon as possible.

In short

Stay home, stay healthy, practice good overall hygiene and stock up on some additional supplies. Wishing all you a healthy and positive time ahead! South Africa need to stand together #bettertogether xx
